Striving to be the Orthodontist of Choice in Sydney

Orthodontic treatment is the process of detection and correction of Malocclusion. Malocclusion is the misalignment or incorrect position of the teeth in relation to each other and to the jawbones. Its forms include crowding and overlapping of teeth, gaps in between teeth, cross-bites (underbite), deep bites, edge-bites, teeth pushed too far forward, or teeth pushed too far inwards.

Depending on your age and situation, Dr. Lee will tailor a specific treatment plan to correct your malocclusion. Contact us now to book for a free assessment with an orthodontist at our Sydney practice.

Visit our orthodontist for interceptive treatment for kids

Most orthodontic problems arise in early childhood. Some of them are genetic in nature, while some are products of lifestyle, diet, and oral habits. But unfortunately, many cases go undetected by the parents or even by the dentists in these early years.

In the past, children visit an orthodontist for treatment when they reach age 12 to 14 years since all the permanent teeth have erupted by this time. With this practice, most dentists extract a tooth to correct bite problem or teeth crowding. However, according to the American Academy of Orthodontics, all children should be brought to the dentist for proper orthodontic assessment by age 7 when the first set of permanent molars had erupted. Treating children at much earlier ages, say between 7 to 11 years, will take advantage of the child’s continuing growth and they are more compliant and receptive with treatment at this age. With interceptive treatment from an orthodontist, fewer or even no teeth are extracted and there are better results.

When you bring your child in for his/her regular check-up here at Top Class Dental, we don’t only check the holes on their teeth, but also pay close attention to how their teeth, bite, and jaws are developing. We know and look out for those early signs of malocclusion, and we make sure that as a parent, you are well-informed if this is something that we detect in your child.

Interceptive Orthodontics is NOT having “BRACES”. It is a phased type of orthodontics which is the practice of extracting malocclusions once they are detected in an attempt to avoid adult malocclusion.

“Why does my child need Interceptive Orthodontics now when he/she will end up with braces later on anyway?” — you might ask. The answer is simple: any form of treatment from an orthodontist is performed a lot easier during the younger years than during adulthood. Below are some of the other advantages of starting with Interceptive Orthodontics over waiting until “old enough” for braces:

  • far better results3plates
  • take advantage of child’s growth to “guide” the facial and jaw bones to grow into correct positions
  • Corrects the “root” of the problem
  • Eliminates poor oral habits (such as thumb sucking, tongue thrusting, mouth breathing, etc.)
  • Better aesthetic results (better facial profile)
  • Reduces or eliminates the need for tooth removal
  • Even if the case will still need Braces to finish up the treatment, it is usually faster and easier.

There’s a vast array of orthodontic appliances used to intercept developing malocclusion. Why adult malocclusion needs treatment from an orthodontist

couch smile

Malocclusion, when left untreated during childhood, persist and get worse during adulthood. The consequences of uncorrected malocclusion include:

Increased susceptibility to periodontal/gum disease and tooth decay. Crooked teeth harbour and retain plaque a lot easier than teeth with a straight alignment. If left long-term, this could lead to irreversible gum/bone disease and tooth decay.

TMJ Disorder. Since our jaw joints (TMJ – Temporo Mandibular Joint) are directly affected by the way we bite, incorrect bite can trigger and sustain TMJ disorder.

Diminished Self-Confidence. When your teeth are crooked, your tendency is to hide your smile. This in turn affects your confidence which ultimately impacts your life as a whole.

If you are one of the many few who missed out on the opportunity of getting your teeth aligned while you were younger, fret not, because IT’S NOT YET TOO LATE.

You can still achieve a beautiful smile with any of the orthodontic treatment options offered by our orthodontist in Sydney, as discussed in the next section.

Braces

They are fixed appliances bonded on the front side of your teeth, that aim to move your teeth to ideal position. There are different types of braces: Metal, Clear Braces (Ceramic/Saphhire), or self-ligating.

  1. Metal Braces

They’re the most basic and cheapest type of braces. They are also the easiest to maintain, that’s why they’re perfect for kids/teenagers who at their age may still struggle in keeping their oral hygiene. Plus, it’s always fun to change and mix-and-match the colour of the rubber ligatures, or “O-rings” on the braces!

  1. Clear Braces (Ceramic/Sapphire)

From the name itself, it’s virtually clear, sometimes almost invisible when you take photos with them on your teeth. Because of this aesthetic property, this is usually the bracket of choice for adults. The material is usually either Ceramic or Sapphire, and we have both of them in stock in our practice ready to go for your appointment with the orthodontist!

Invisalign/ Clear Aligners

These are clear plastic aligners used in sequence until the desired result is achieved. They are very aesthetic due to the absence of bonded braces on the teeth. However, not all cases are suitable for this treatment. The leading brand in the market is Invisalign, of which Dr Lee is a recognised provider. If you want to know if you’re a good candidate for Invisalign, book now for an initial consult.
